Eating Disorder Awareness; Figure Competitor, Sabrina, Shares her Journey-30 Years of ED to Freedom2/27/2023 Today I get to speak with Sabrina Cuevas, who has such a great story! The evolution of our work together shows her growth and commitment to her self.
The purpose behind my Build More Than Just a Body coaching programs, like the 5 Week Food Relationship Program and 1:1 Ongoing Coaching, is to give each client autonomy in the journey, because everyone needs something different from the process. (see ways to work with me: www.celestial.fit/work-with-me.html) To her, the meaning of Build More Thank Just A Body started as simply physical, but has since morphed into and emotional and spiritual element as our work together has deepened. As Sabrina has addressed the internal work, it has started to manifest on her physical body, as well. Sabrina shares the tools she has used to make this her easier prep yet, like focusing on her goal through journaling and meditation, as well as meal time rituals. When she found competing, she had been struggling with a long-term eating disorder. But she knew in order to be successful in bodybuilding, she would have to address her eating disorder. Throughout our three years working together, Sabrina embraced the work and was all in for her recovery. She spent so many years struggling in secret but now sees the importance of sharing her story for allowing her self to heal. The biggest difference Sabrina has experienced has been a sense of freedom and a cloud lifted from her. She now has the space to discover who she is and what she actually wants. This audio is my mom singing one of her favorite songs of all time, Amazing Grace, acapella. She had such a beautiful voice & loved singing
She sang her entire life, even professionally In 2015 she died on the table in the hospital & truly by the grace of God was saved to be with us for another 6 years. Her time in the hospital was tumultuous in 2015 for many reasons One of the hardest things was watching her have to rest from singing after having had tubes down her throat for weeks on end She had this audio on her phone recorded as she gained her confidence & stamina in singing back. She never stopped trying. I saw the toll it took on her bc to my mom, EVERYTHING was a song! 2 years ago today I collapsed to the floor as I heard of the traumatic sudden loss of my mom There is no adjective that could ever describe the pain. There are no words that I think could ever share the story of my mother in a way that truly honors all that she was. This has been a rough go around for me this year without her Some days lately have been absolutely brutal for me emotionally as I yearn for my mothers physical presence. I know people say she is with me always and I can talk to her but it doesnât make up for what Iâve lost and what my family has endured Not having my mom in my life anymore is something I have to wake up and face every day Sometimes itâs a nagging pain other times a quick sharp pain and most days a dull pain Iâve come to live with. The hardest part is knowing she wonât be there for anything anymore I know itâs my love living on I loved her wisdom, our laughs together, & our daily (most days multiple times) phone calls and texts. Iâm grateful to somehow still remember how her skin felt and the knuckles of her fingers and how they progressed over her wedding ring and her hands I had countless nights with her at the side of my bed holding my hand or playing with my feet or just falling asleep next to me I cherish those memories Although making sense of her death and sharing it one day may never be the reality, I know I can honor her life and how she lived by doing right by her She empowered me in every way imaginable I know sheâs singing in heavenð So often I hear people say that if people don't support you in your journey then you should just cut them out of your life and find new friends
While I do believe our true friends and unconditionally loving family will support us, sometimes values, beliefs, desires, and lifestyles just don't align anymore or they may struggle with the way it changes you While you may end up distancing yourself or setting a firm boundary about their presence in your life, I don't believe it is the most considerate or compassionate approach to relationships that matter to you Learning to deal with change, conflict, and desires within relational contexts is key for long term connections It won't always be perfect communication or understanding but facing the difficulties is much more beneficial to growth than avoiding them (although that would be so much easier in the moment!) By taking the time to help others understand your journey & how to support you, you foster a deeper connection & more reliable support network which is MUCH MORE conducive to success than cutting people off it (we may exist in an individualistic society/culture but we are meant to thrive with others, we are a social species!) We want to have positive connections, support, and community in the pursuit of our goals and we especially want it from our loved ones! Cutting people off without taking the time to consider where they might be coming from is very unfair Imagine if they changed something in their life for the better or worse, you would have a reaction to it too, right? If they are someone you want to keep in your circle, then this graphic could support your process before making a decision like cutting them off I led a workshop for a few teams as well as my own clients and members on effective communication strategies and these were some of the common themes which came out of it Which by the way, if you want access to that workshop you can dm me for it and I am happy to provide you the link to enroll for access to it and hundreds of other resources and workshops http://www.celestial.fit/links.html If any of these are relatable for you, I would love to hear your thoughts!😍 #buildmorethanjustabody That’s a wrap on the 2023 #BUILDMORETHANJUSTABODY x @glamgirlbikini Season Kickoff Retreat ☀️💜💖✨🧠💪🏻
Such an epic weekend with a wonderful group of women who all could relate, support, and uplift each other It was amazing to hear so many great insights, stories, and experiences and witness everyone soaking in the workouts, posing, yoga & meditation, hike, and mental health work which I contributed We discussed food relationship, body image, communication strategies, emotional awareness & regulation, daily routines & habits, and more! I’m so grateful for all the women who came and to all the glam girl coaches. It was another successful event with even deeper connections made I’m so excited for next year already!😁⏳ Want to be kept up to date on live events? I am so blessed to work with such amazing clients who are dedicated to overcoming some of their hardest battles Many of the people I work with come to me so vulnerable, lost, and frustrated They often feel like this is their last hope and that they just want to be able to have a healthy relationship with food and their body without giving up their fitness goals Desiree had been following a lifestyle program for a long time with goals of competing in the future She just earned status as a registered dietitian and has since been very focused on her career goals and feels empowered in her relationship with food to tackle any goal she sets moving forward I love staying in touch with my clients too so when I heard the news I was thrilled for her! If you are debating on working with me and aren’t sure if I’m the mentor for you, I hope stories like hers inspire you to finally take action for yourself You deserve to feel at peace around food, in your body, and with the choices you make! The purpose of the work we do is to develop a champion mentality that supports you in having the most fulfilling and empowering preps, improvement seasons, and allllllllll aspects of life between If you’d like to learn more, see other success stories/case studies, and apply to work with me, visit www.celestial.fit/foodfreedom ![]() Currently reversing out of a gut protocol & mini cut I shared a little in my story & was asked to share more Basically, I was put on antibiotics back in November & it absolutely wrecked my body on every level I was finding it difficult to eat the amount of carbs/ food we were at even though prior to that I was so hungry & hoping for more food The food wasn’t fully digesting or sitting with me & I was super inflamed & felt heavier / puffier & weight climbed a bit I wasn’t unhappy with how I looked but I knew I could feel better I’d have pain with certain clothing or my belt around my waistline because of the issues When I talked with my coach & shared some data he decided we should do a Candida protocol So we did a 4 week low fodmap Candida protocol & keto Now we are slowly incorporating some more low fodmap carbs, my bambody again which i missed, & will get a free meal this week too but still conscious of the carb intake so as to get the most out of the protocol & support my body For workouts we have been only doing 4 days a week & only 1 lower body day per week because these leggies like to grow And when we do it lower body it’s mainly all glute focused I am super happy with the progress of the gut protocol & mini cut We dropped about 4lbs but had ups & downs It was so much more about how I felt. It was a nice lil challenge & a good reminder too of why I am grateful for my flexibility :p I hope that in all of your seasons of this sport & lifestyle you’ll embrace doing what’s best for your body & longevity It may not be easy, ideal, or what you want to do & it may demand more of you at a time when you weren’t expecting it or your body does things against your will, but it’s better to work with your body than against it My coach @seeyoulaterleaner was telling me that this may even allow us to reverse out further to support growth more which is motivating The point of this is to say that the challenges or unexpected changes, although at times difficult, often help us become better versions of ourselves & better all around athletes I have found this countless times in my journey especially as I always work to #BUILDMORETHANJUSTABODY 2020 USAs to 2022 North Americans
So much changed between these photos The physical change keeps me fired up to keep working diligently in my current improvement season From Dec 2020 to Nov 2021 had a lot of trauma & pain through the loss of my mother as well as getting sick right after my show & managing entering the final phase of my masters program, moving states, & living alone for the first time… one thing didn’t change, my commitment to my routine There were times during my grief where I only cried all day & my stomach hurt & flipped so much that I couldn’t tell if I was hungry, full, or sick Routine helped me nourish & care for myself in that time even when dark thoughts came over me making me doubt or question literally the point of anything But my bodybuilding lifestyle was so engrained in me I kept on point My business & the clients i had to serve, my family & my closest friends kept me going No one gave up on me so I wouldn’t either. I am forever grateful to those who showed up My body put on a lot of weight last improvement season even despite consistency (swipe to 2nd photo to see Sep 2021 height of improvement season 159lbs to Sep 2022 10 days post show 113.6lbs) I knew so much of it was likely a response to my life changes I was actually confident in myself because I wasn’t binging or overeating. Even despite excessive fat gain I was proud because I didn’t give up on myself I pushed hard in the gym & I showed up for me! As a result, I created my next best physique that got to be displayed by the end of my 2022 season It took a LONG time & a LOT of work to get there but it fortified me & taught me a lot I had amazing guidance to bring my best & prep & peak by @seeyoulaterleaner he implemented new strategies I never had the opportunity to try before & it made a difference Now we are almost 6 months post show! I share my check ins every Tuesday in my story btw @celestial_fit I hope to help someone out there who is doubting their progress, struggling, or feels lost Embrace confidence, prioritize execution, & let go of the timeline With consistency & compassion you’ll get there❤️ #BELIEVEYOURWAYTOBADASS & #BUILDMORETHANJUSTABODY Ever feel like the joy of a moment is being stolen by the fear of food, self-consciousness, or self-doubt?
Struggle with understanding your emotions and how it impacts your behavior? My program is not simply about “food” and “eating” and “staying on track” We work together to develop a champion mentality that serves many areas of your life by addressing underlying concerns, challenges, and needs Many people sign up with me thinking about the food relationship they want to have or how they want to see themselves and their goals After Trish attended one of my events, where we had a powerful side bar discussion about how her past was likely contributing to her present responses to life, she opted to work with me I developed this program to support peeling the layers back so we not just change automatic habits / maladaptive behaviors or coping skills but we transform what’s causing them to be activated in the first place Trish struggled with identifying her emotions and had just gone through a traumatic event losing her home to Hurricane Ian and being displaced and distressed It really revealed to her a lot of her difficulty with identifying, processing, and moving forward rather than numbing through food or avoidance When we do this, as she identified, it can really steal our joy from other amazing people or opportunities in our life I was most excited to hear that she not only could better understand herself and her choices but that in her choices now she has freedom and PRESENCE rather than distracting fear Don’t delay healing. As comfortable as it is, if you’re feeling the call to transform, you can learn more about this program and apply to work with me at: www.celestial.fit/foodfreedom . Let’s #BUILDMORETHANJUSTABODY ![]() This has been my best improvement season ever! Some challenges & new disciplines being practiced, prioritized, & reinforced but going mostly smoothly Rather than sharing every nitty gritty detail of it now, I’ll share a few themes It’s not just improvement for me as in growing/building but also in strength, performance (even in posing), how I function, gut health (recently—will expand more later), feel, perform, approach life, feel about myself, & other areas of life When you only look at improvement season as a time to forge a better physique, you easily miss out on all the other value this season can bring your life Transparently, I have so much more I’d like to be using my time for & don’t always The longer I’m in improvement season, the more I love it & want to stay since it feels so good! I’m really proud of how I’m handling challenges or changes & just staying focused as possible I know I’m doing what I gotta do & I feel good about it My coach @seeyoulaterleaner provides me excellent support and guidance and has helped me navigate making this the best improvement season yet because we have had various things come up but the goal to build and bring a new best has never changed even with slight detours I know that come 2024, I’ll be glad I put this work in mentally, physically, & spiritually It can be harder to celebrate & see the impact of your efforts in improvement season but when you look back and compare your progress (not just aesthetically but even down to perception of demands) you won’t miss it—it’ll be so obvious that you showed up even without needing the tangible end result evidence yet That means having faith in your journey every day can breed that determination to keep going Rather than waiting to SEE it, make time to celebrate what you are DOING that will ultimately lead you to the results you want because then those habits will be sustained & your results will be too! How do you perceive the work you’re currently doing in the season you’re in? Can you trust it’s helpful even when you’re not “seeing it yet”? What are you currently focused on that you can celebrate knowing it will support you in sustaining future results? ![]() If you put a problem under the microscope it can reveal many of the puzzle pieces you haven’t fully put together yet On the surface, a client might tell me they struggle with binging, overeating, scrutinizing their body…(to name a few) Under the microscope, through loving support, positive regard, lots of strategic questions, and specific practices and principles, we see so much more… Emotions Past experiences Fears Beliefs Unmet needs Fragile / Unclear Identity Misalignment of values Unfair expectations & standards Repressed reactions or memories Symptoms of other incidents or struggles And much more. With every “click” comes a new insight or door to walk through This doesn’t mean we should see ourselves as always needing “fixing” though A lot of times as my clients dig deeper they start seeing a list of problems I see so many solutions The more detail, the better! When we reveal what is underneath my mind begins to go through all the strategies that can be employed, processes to go through, further questions to ask, prompts, and challenges to present to the client It’s not about “fixing” it’s about experimenting If we just address what’s on the surface, other problems will pop up in new ways So when we go deeper we might kill two birds with one stone rather than just playing whack a mile everytime something new comes up I am a huge advocate of getting help! Mental health is hugely important for all I know as a competitor it can be hard to find someone who “gets it” Which is where I pride myself in providing competitors with personal development coaching and support to improve your relationship with food, your body, and your goals To learn more about how you can work with me and be part of the #BUILDMORETHANJUSTABODY community or to benefit from any of my free resources visit the link in my bio @celestial_fit www.celestial.fit |
