The Monday after a Competition...

​Show day has come to an end...You get off stage & can’t wait to finally sink your teeth into those treats you’ve saved for victory night.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You get a taste & realize that the wait has been worth it/now you can enjoy! Saturday night you celebrate. Sunday you have brunch, lunch, & dinner in an effort to ‘squeeze as much in’ before the reverse diet starts on Monday. But when Monday comes around you think, “oh I guess I will have this snack I’ve always said no to at work” or “oh I totally forgot about this yummy treat I saved! I’ll have a lil piece”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Soon you start feeling guilty because you had set the intention to be perfect! But even with macros, a meal plan, or all the will power you somehow can’t help yourself. But, Here’s the deal. After a show, after all of the prepping w/ will power, & discipline...a simple ‘I’m on prep’ isn’t what is going to save you anymore. Unfortunately, we just don’t work like that.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You have to rewrite your identity & belief systems.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Without a show in the near future we have to be diligent to switch our expectations of ourself & rewrite our food story. We must shift our relationship with food so we can grow w/ it. This doesn’t mean we eat all the crap that comes our way but it does mean we start to open our minds more. In order to feel at peace around food, we must believe that food is not our enemy & we’re definitely not at war w/ our body!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are in an awesome world of competitions but we mustn’t let this cloud the vision & service provided for us through our body... THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Binging, restricting, overeating, purging it all w/ cardio or less food, trying to justify every move you make IS NOT HEALTHY. Period. Your mental health, fulfillment, stability, & self-acceptance matters...

NATURE HEALS

When I am immersed in nature is when I feel most connected to my soul.


Nature reminds me that there is purpose beyond the screens, daily routines, and all of life’s fluff. Nature has always been my favorite healer.


When I was extremely depressed with suicidal ideations the first thing I put on my ‘things that make me happy and I need to make more time for’ list was nature related (stargazing and hiking to be exact).


Nature cleanses us with water, grounds us with earth, restores our breath with the wind, removes darkness in my mind with the sun’s rays, and inspires me through the way it all works together, beautifully and purposefully.


The earth is our planet, and it is part of a galaxy, which is part of a universe and we can never fully understand or fathom all of this and the deeper we get the deeper we realize we have to go.


As I walked through the forest with sounds of birds, running water, warm sun, and cool shade surrounded by such lovely souls I found myself in the deepest state of gratitude.


I wrote a reflection journal and one line which I’d like to reveal here is: “This weekend I learned that the climb, spontaneity, and open mindedness is always worth it. I realize how supported I am and how abundant my life has a l w a y s been. I am truly blessed beyond belief”.


I took a leap of faith and reached out to my friend Fiona Kenney to see if I could come visit her.
We planned a very short and spontaneous trip and it was like we had never been apart. Our conversations still as fulfilling as ever before. Miss her right now even!

When we were out exploring and arrived at a beautiful spot that we made our day camp we both walked through rocks into a meadow, took our shoes off, and grounded ourselves. We then proceeded to fall asleep in the breeze and the sun with total peace surrounding us.
​
Waking up to such beautiful serenity is quite indescribable. We then fished with her fiancé Shawn Estey who was so incredibly accommodating, fun, and patient.


I learned so much about myself and life in this whole trip that I knew it was meant to work out the way it did.


If you feel hopeless, get out in nature.
If you feel alone, get out in nature.
If you feel sad, get out in nature.

There’s so much life to be lived, BE BOLD AND SAY YES TO IT😍🙌🏻⛰

Going into an off-season, I like to remind myself that there is a time and a place for everything. There’s a reason for every season. There’s no right or wrong way when you commit to fueling up YOUR soul without the need to please or meet others expectations.

If you’re in a season of change, always Be forgiving, be mindful, be aware, and most of all, be loving. Because the more you love yourself the more inspired you will be to move, eat, think, and live in ways that help you live the most fulfilling, freeing and empowered life.

It’s time to build more than just a body, it’s your improvement season, it’s the perfect opportunity to resolve any inner world conflict you experience that we so often neglect with our incredible quest for achievement in our sport.

I guarantee you, changing your body or only focusing on trying to control every little detail of your life will NOT bring you peace of mind, comfort, or happiness. You have to find a way for yourself to REMEMBER how capable and INCREDIBLE you are...

FOOD RELATIONSHIP DURING THE OFF-SEASON

​On prep, Food is seen as something that forms us and chisels us during a prep. We see our body change and connect those changes to all the work we’ve been doing. Being so focused on that outer change can lead us to forget what food is most famous for; helping us to FUNCTION! It is literally medicine.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the improvement season I recommend creating some new belief systems and perspectives around food. This could be:
I eat food that makes me feel amazing, nourishes me, and is enjoyable. When I have food that my body isn’t used to I focus on quality over quantity and truly savor it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every time I eat food I recognize it as energy for my body while accepting my decisions and always moving forward. If I eat in a way that hurts my body then I apologize to myself, accept, learn the lesson, and love myself through it enough to move on in peace.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Shifts in beliefs like that can turn a regretful binge into an opportunity to learn and understand your body.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At the end of the day, it’s not as much about the food as it is your relationship with it. Just think, some people fear bananas the same way you might fear cupcakes. It’s all relative and we are all on our own journey. Developing a healthy relationship with food starts with working on our relationship with ourself and redefining our beliefs about food and our own eating habits.

You can define your body, but your body cannot fully define you.

There’s so much more to you than meets the eye.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So whatever skin you’re in, be happy and grateful that it is sustaining your life and allowing for you to have a human experience.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Find gratitude in function and allow the form take care of itself as a result.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Today I went and did a Body fat scan and I’m soo excited because I made small tweaks in my program this week with some new exercises, inspired cardio workouts like more hiking and a random hiit sesh just for fun, plus some dietary changes. I listened to my body a lot more and kept filling head with loving thoughts. This led me to gain 1.9 lbs muscle and drop 0.2% body fat🤯
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I also launched a new program, started new psych courses, worked with my clients programming, and still managed!! I WAS ON FIRE THIS WEEK WITH SO MUCH JOY!!!!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s the thing, Just the week before I was starting to question if the programming I had made for myself was actually doing what it needed to be doing. I hadn’t seen much of a body composition change other than 0.5lbs of muscle which looking back on was quite a bit but I was sad that I had to gain fat for it. I am lucky to also have a coach who even when not building my plans will still respond and give me support or see how I’m doing. And then I caught myself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
First of all, I needed to put on some fat. Second, I need a solid base to build muscle on. And Third, I AM HAPPY, HEALTHIER, AND MORE ENERGIZED THAN BEFORE. I truly LOVE my body and am enjoying this off season so much because I’m improving!  Sometimes we think the struggles we are facing will never go away but when we choose to trust and keep moving forward, they do!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But we can face challenges with much more ease when we have learned and developed mental/emotional strategies for doing so. HEALTHIER PUMPKIN PIE

HEALTHIER PUMPKIN PIE (the recipe you’ve all been asking me for)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
SAVE THIS POST FOR THANKSGIVING OR GET A PRACTICE ROUND IN NOW!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ingredients:
One 15oz. can pumpkin (not canned pumpkin pie)
3/4 cup stevia
1 capful vanilla extract
2 eggs
1/2tsp or Dash of salt
1.5 tsp or sprinkling of Cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice seasoning
1/2 cup coffee mate sugar free hazelnut or pumpkin pie spice creamer
2 mini serving French vanilla coffee creamer (or just 2 tblsp)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For pie crust you can do a coconut and almond flour one from Pinterest / google or you can just buy one. I used a regular one because I was making it for the fam and who doesn’t love graham cracker crust lol.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Method:
Throw it all in a bowl and whisk. Idk the proper timing or cooking science. Just do that then Pour into a pie crust and 9-inch glass or foil looking pan (sorry idk the terms)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Baking instructions:
Heat oven to 425°F.
Bake at this temp for 15 minutes.
Reduce oven temperature to 350°F; bake 40 to 50 minutes longer or until knife inserted near center comes out clean.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cool completely, about 2 hours. I tried it warm and it’s better cold.
Store in fridge
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Nothing costs you as much as losing your inner peace does.

If you do not invest in your inner world, you cannot be fully present for the investments you’ve made in the physical world.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can own things, look a certain way, have money, invest in stocks or your own business, step on stages, and earn status.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But none of that can help you fill the gaping hole created when we are suffering with limiting beliefs, low self-esteem, negative emotions, or fear of failure.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’re not fully present and invested in yourself, don’t ask the world why it isn’t fully invested in you... When I was dealing with inner turmoil after some of my competitions I found that I wasn’t 110% in my business, family, relationship, or school.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I struggled so much to just reconnect to the world and the more I tried to cover up the pain with more things on my to-do list, the less I could really do and the worse I felt inside.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Invest the time, energy, money, and effort back into yourself and watch as things begin to realign around you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Inner Peace = Outer Fulfillment
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Physical Coping Mechanisms = Bandaid
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Inner Emotional and Mental Healing = Full extraction, surgery, wound cleaning, stitches, and recovery.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

YOU CANNOT ENJOY LIFE IF YOU ALWAYS FEEL GUILTY, ASHAMED, or DOUBTFUL

I remember being so excited to finally go out to meals with my family and boyfriend again and actually eat with them, order off the menu, sit down with them, share food, and have an incredible time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But after my prep had come to an end, I realized the joy of eating out actually left me. 🤔 it was stolen by something much worse: guilt, fear, shame, and embarrassment.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All through the prep I could go out to eat, bring my Tupperware happily, and ENJOY their company regardless of how bad I wanted a chip dipped in salsa. I was so deeply rooted in my identity of a competitor that it was easy (and necessary) to say ‘no, thank you’ when the aroma of the four cheese pizza enlightened my senses.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I actually found I was able to become MORE present with the PEOPLE because I wasn’t there for the food.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But then prep ended, and the joy was harder to find. Instead, I was constantly obsessing about what I was going to order, checking the nutrition facts trying to justify the choices in my head or convince myself I’d do more cardio or eat less later or the next day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I would explain and talk about what I was ordering and why over and over and over again as though it would help me feel better about wanting a burger and ordering it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I would also over explain ordering chicken breast or veggies as though I had something to prove. But the more I did this, the less interested people around me were in enjoying a meal together, because I wasn’t enjoyable.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I would spend the whole time either physically expressing anxiety or emotionally feeling it so much that I was no longer present. All I was thinking about was the food, what people would think of me, and what I’d have to do to eat it (even if it was ‘healthy’ or ‘meal plan/macro’ friendly).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My excitement dwindled for going out because I would feel crippled and embarrassed by my obsession with the food and i felt like I couldn’t be the best friend, girlfriend, daughter, or sister in those moments.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One (of the many) days I had a breakdown over this to my mom, she said, “celeste, you keep saying you’re going to just enjoy yourself, yet all you keep doing is explaining why it’s okay and what it means and why it matters to you which shows me that you aren’t able to enjoy this because you’re still focused so much on your decision” (or something along those lines).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s when it hit me that they COULD see it and they were IMPACTED by it 😪. I asked myself, what happened? Where did your healthy relationship with food go that you worked so hard for? And it hit me, I was ‘safe’ when I was over justifying everything but I was ‘unsafe’ when I chose to poke a wound that was fresh and hurting so badly.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So what did I do? I got uncomfortable again. I chose to see what I was hiding from. Rewrite my limiting beliefs, choose new stories, and remember who I am and what my new intentions/goals are. I had to separate myself from my happy, fulfilled, proud, empowered prep identity and recreate my healthy, fulfilled, empowered, strong, life loving, improvement season self.

I know I’m not the only competitor who has been through what I described. This is a common story that is not shared by most, I would even go as far as to say that it is not shared so much because of how painful it is from how ashamed we feel because we are not meeting a standard others might expect from us especially if as a competitor, or even as fitness & health coaches.

Here’s the deal though, all the physical work is INCREDIBLE but it means nothing if your inner world is crumbling. The earth would not be such a powerful gravitational force supporting all our journeys without its CORE...just like you cannot create such epic momentum, results, and positive force without your HIGH VIBING HIGH FREQUENCY MAGNET OF YOUR SOUL and EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR INNER BEING.
