![]() MAKING HEALTHY COMPARISONS There is a theory in social psychology called ‘Social Comparison Theory’ Which essentially suggests that we compare ourselves to other people as a way to evaluate our own abilities especially when we feel unsure of them! It’s used as a way to prove or disprove our concept of self This happens a lot in the fitness and competing world as well as business and entrepreneurship! With social media we can instantly conclude whether we are ‘good’ or ‘not so good’ at something Ever watch someone’s posing routine, lifts, professional photos, or even just their shape as a whole and compare yourself to see how you might stack up? Or compare your videos, bank account, speech invites, travel adventures, living situation, or clientele base to others? Sometimes, comparison is self-serving when we use it to our advantage. But for some people it tends to derail them. Like alllll the people who wanted to be great musicians but played their guitar 2x and decided they weren’t good enough, never would be like hendrix, and put it back in its case. So how do we make sure this comparison is healthy? Simply put, make sure our mind/self-concept is already in a healthy place before participating in comparison. Consider self-esteem, self-worth, & self-efficacy All three are different, all three matter. Many studies will show you that the people who have a high level of self-efficacy are more likely to persist after failure & be able to recover from the loss quicker which then contributes to higher self-worth & esteem! But like I said, this is just simplification of something which runs deeper than a blanket statement. I am known for completely transforming individuals’ relationship with themselves. From the way they think about themselves to the actions they take with directed self-introspection, growth, & healing.
