ANGELINE JEANSON; Perfecting Posing Routines, From Debilitating Car Accident to Engineer and Bikini Pro, Systemize for Success, and Are You Ready to Go Pro?

1/29/2021

Today we hear from Angeline Jeanson. She is a mechanical engineer and posing coach for Team Atlas, and former dancer who came back from a terrible car accident to become an IFBB pro.

Celeste begins by asking Angeline about her pre-show rituals when she was still completing. Angeline explains she would listen to the same song during prep and it would calm her on show day. She would also do this before she stepped on stage as a dancer.

Because most people know Angeline as a top posing coach, Celeste asks about her backstory and what led her to bodybuilding. Angeline describes a car accident she had as an 18-year-old that required her to re-learn to walk. Her physical therapist told her she needed to begin weight training to aid her recovery. She had always been in shape because of dancing, and after two years of training, a friend suggested she compete. She had a terrible experience at her first show.

She knew nothing of posing or proper make up, but she loved being on stage. In her second show, she placed first and soon went to her first national show, placed first. In Canada, one needs to win the overall to win a pro card, and she finally did that in 2017. After 6 years of competing on the world stage, she is retired. Because she coaches some of the top IFBB pros, she does not feel it is right to compete against them.

Celeste asks Angeline what she thinks of how the bikini division has changed over time and where it will go in the future. When Angeline first started competing, the standards were not very strict. She likes that there are clear expectations now because it gives her competitors a standard to work towards.

With 15 years as a dancer, she carries that experience into the way she coaches posing, using steps and counts to build routines. Each detail is calculated to the second, just like dance choreography. This is what sets her apart from other posing coaches. She is consistently trying to push posing to another level. Angeline spends hours creating routines for each athlete and does not look at what others are doing. She is not influenced by what others are doing. Angeline does not post her athletes’ routines before they hit the stage because they have been copied in the past. She records everything to study and change as needed.

Celeste asks Angeline if she has any pet peeves that come up when she is watching other competitors pose. Angeline says she has a list! She points out that amateurs waste a lot of their 15 seconds on stage with hair flips and arm movements when they should be focusing on showcasing their physiques. Angeline doesn’t have a preference in working with newbies or pros, but she wants to work with athletes that bring good attitudes and leave their ego out of the process. Angeline finds the criteria for posing is always the same but what helps an amateur go pro is when they show up to a show already presenting as a pro.

Angeline shares her trick to choosing the right suit, makeup , and general look for the stage. She says to look at the previous season’s Olympia top 5 to set the criteria for the upcoming season. It’s that simple. If the top 5 Olympians are wearing blues and purples, why would you show up with a red suit? The type of posing they do is what you should bring to your next show.

Angeline explains that she only works with members of Team Atlas because of the shared mentality with the other coaches, James and Jennifer. She chooses every detail, from suit to hair, so each competitor presents their best. When she worked with other coaches, they did not always see eye to eye. Angeline speaks generally to stretching and how it is specific to each girl. She recommends working with a physical therapist or a massage therapist to see where your deficiencies in movement may be.

Celeste shares a listener question about how to be as comfortable on stage as one is at home practicing. Angeline says the competitor needs to ask herself why she doesn’t feel comfortable on stage. Is it because they are super shy, they did not practice enough? You can’t solve the problem until you know what is causing it. Angeline stresses the importance of practicing like you are on stage to build comfort and confidence. Angeline explains that she has always strived to be the best at what she does and that naturally carried over to posing. She even calls herself “annoying” to the point where she purchased all the posing shoes she could to tell her clients what to buy and not to buy.

Angeline begins to talk about her background as a mechanical engineer. When she was visiting universities, she had three professional choices; doctor, lawyer, or engineer. She decided on engineering because she loves problem solving and wants to know “everything about everything”. She has been working on business aircrafts for the past seven years and she really loves her profession. Angeline speaks to how she has considered transitioning full time to being a posing coach. During the COVID quarantine, her business shut down and she realized how much she missed it. Because she worked so hard to earn her degree, she feels leaving the profession would almost feel like a failure.

Because she has two demanding professions, Angeline finds success through structure. She wakes up early and keeps a strict schedule to stay organized. She does not waste a minute. She also uses alarms to help her stay on track. When she was competing, her boss was also supportive and understanding of her unique needs. Now that she isn’t competing, she rarely trains and doesn’t diet. Now she just enjoys food. When she wasn’t competing, she never rebounded and maintained her physique. Now she just trains for fun and to relax. But because she coaches so many posing clients, that also counts as training.

Celeste shares a listener question regarding being a female in a predominantly male field. Angeline says her personality lends itself to working in the field of engineering and has rarely had issues.

Angeline shares her advice for competitors in various stages of their journeys. For new competitors, she recommends to choose their first team wisely as to not waste time and money on their journey. Having a good coach and team will set you up for a favorable experience and help maintain your health. For competitors on their way to pro, she recommends not competing until you look ready. Analyze your posing and your physique and take your time. Aim for what the successful pros look like. Define what you want and work towards it.

In this week's episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk has the pleasure of speaking with Chelsea Stonestreet, a 29 year old business development director for Spooner physical therapy and a realtor in Arizona who also provides online lifestyle coaching. who used to be a competitive boxer before having her now 8 year old daughter. She started bodybuilding 3 and a half years ago and fell in love with the structure of prep as it was one thing she could control in her life on her mission to be confident in her body post baby.

Even though she didn’t love being on stage, was told she couldn’t be successful in the sport due to severe stretch marks, and getting second callouts all at her first show she decided she could do better and proved to herself she was the only one who would define her success. This sparked the next 3 years and ultimately after 12 shows a first place and pro card win at NPC Universe. This soon to be wife and step mom serves as a powerful example that anything is possible if you put in the work and never give up.

Chelsea explains to Celeste about her first show-day experience and insecurities about wearing a bikini. Even though Chelsea has been successful in the IFBB division, she was once told at the amateur level that her stretch marks on her abdomen would hold her back from success.

Due to her competitive nature and desire to better herself, Chelsea dove into self-improvement eventually earning her IFBB title at NPC Universe after twelve shows. Chelsea now reflects on her past struggles and successes before stepping on stage to truly enjoy the experience.

Chelsea discusses her previous passion for boxing. She states that competitive boxing and bikini bodybuilding have similarities, mostly by subjecting yourself to the judgement of hundreds of people in the crowd.

Chelsea oftentimes has to reflect on her boxing experiences to get herself calm her nerves, “You can get into a [boxing] ring and get yourself knocked out, you can throw yourself in a bikini and go on stage” Furthermore, Chelsea states her strength of digging deep and pushing further than last time allows her to shine in competition prep.

Celeste asks Chelsea why she decided to transition from boxing to bodybuilding. Chelsea believes getting punched repeatedly will affect her mental and physical long-term health. Although she has always loved the sport of bodybuilding, being a single mom made her weigh the importance of family over injury. She will occasionally “hit the bag” for stress relief and cardio during her offseason.
Celeste and Chelsea discuss her training on prep and post season. Chelsea focuses on increased calories and heavy lifting in the offseason as she is able to build muscle easily. As a lifestyle coach, she develops circuit style training and bodyweight exercises while keeping the main focus on movement.
Chelsea informs Celeste on her body improvements over the years. During her final national show, Chelsea was told she was too lean and conditioned and was able to feed herself up to the next show.

Chelsea advises listeners to find a trustworthy and quality coach that gives adequate feedback as feedback from the judges can be confusing and frustrating.  Celeste explains that if you love the sport, you will continue to pursue it despite the differing feedback of judges.

Chelsea discusses how minor details matter for placement. Suit color is a priority for her coach and believes red is the best color for her overall package. Chelsea emphasizes that stage presence and overall package, to include your suit color, can be the difference between placement.

Chelsea tells Celeste she has never been told by a judge that her stretch marks affected her placement. Chelsea has been micro needling to improve the color and density of her stretch marks and has noticed great changes.

Chelsea shares that both herself and Fiancé earned their IFBB pro cards at the NPC Universe! Prior to meeting her Fiancé, she accepted being a single mother. Chelesa admits to initially being scared of being a step-mother but has fallen in love with her Fiancés children over the years.

Chelsea is proud to have influence on young children and to provide siblings for her daughter. Celeste and Chelsea praise the newest Bikini Olympian and are happy to see a mother win the title. Furthermore, Chelsea values quality family bonding and makes sure to have family dinner every night without cell phones.

Finally, Chelsea tells Celeste her goals as an IFBB Pro while providing listeners and fellow competitors advice on reaching the IFBB stage. Chelsea’s impressive background and humble demeanor provides an episode you do not want to miss!

CANDICE HENRICKS; Caffeine Abuse, From Pity & Comparison to Faith & Peace, Daily Devotionals, 12 Hour Shifts

Picture
In this episode, we’re introduced to Candice Henricks, a new IFBB pro who works as a registered respiratory therapist who is inspired to support others in sharing experiences and showing love to all with her faith in Christianity and the belief she holds that we are all in this together and no one is alone. She dives into her journey, the power of faith, her career, vulnerable stories and struggles of her life, and caffeine abuse.

Candice reflects on 2020 as a year of internal growth. It’s not the year you get what you want, but a year you must make the most of. During her prep to her pro card, she was in quite a bad place, mentally. She could no longer find joy in the process.  She was struggling with her diet, after a 28-week prep.

All in all, she could not even really enjoy the pro card. But moving to Texas changed the game. Thanks to her  new coach, she was introduced to a more flexible diet style. Her relationship with food changed. She was able to reflect on what she really enjoys. She feels much healthier.

This prep was also super different regarding the training. Weight lifting sessions were more intense than ever. However, cardio was kept reasonable.  This was a brand new approach. This made her feel empowered and made her fall in love with the process again.
This prep started as a challenge. Her friend Gina Scafoglio, who’s also an IFBB pro, told Candice she should try and compete with her. Challenge accepted! Candice was on fire, loved everything, and was thriving.

Candice used to compare her life to IG influencers’ lives. Before moving to Texas, she was in a bad place, financially.  She had just graduated but couldn’t find a job. It was a hard time. And it was also very hard not to compare herself to others who « made it ». The solution was simple : temporarily deleting social medias ! And taking time to reflect on herself.

During this waiting period, Candice took time to reflect on her purpose, and accepting the path she was on. She was able to find balance with food, and put herself in the right mental state for work. She could also focus on her faith.

When Candice was 17, her mom died of a cancer. This lead Candice to her first journey into faith, leaving her with questions : « why ? », « who’s God ? ». Since then, she’s been building her faith.

This also made her realize she wanted to help people, she wants to be that person who shows you you can overcome darkness. This is how she choose her career path.  She knew she wanted to help and tried to work as a nurse. However, bathing/ cleaning people, … that was not meant for her.

Then she turned to respiratory therapy. She graduated in a year. This path helped her to switch her mindset from « I can’t » to « I can ». It’s not easy to come from unemployment to 12-hour shifts though.  But with organization and routine, Candice made the transition.
Another point to take into consideration was the fact that we’re in a pandemic. Working in a hospital these times can be really nerve wrecking. But with her fresh mindset, Candice reminds herself that people are the priority, not bodybuilding, which is a « hobby ». It is important to find a routine that works for you, to stay grounded.

She used to abuse caffeine. She didn’t realize it, but was pretty agitated, leading to relationships issues. After 1 week limiting her intake, she felt a complete change and felt much more calm.
Regarding artificial sweeteners, she doesn’t want to go cold turkey, but she focuses on living a healthy lifestyle and wants to fuel her body with nourishing foods. Candice loves the pro milieu. She competed at the Battle of Texas, sharing the stage with Olympians. She loved that experience. Compared to amateur level, there is much more positivity. It feels like a community, girls are rooting for each other. This is an inspiring experience.

Now Candice is in a better mindset and she’s able to truly enjoy the pro status. She puts less pressure on body building and no longer « has to » do things. She switched from not being in the moment to living a healthy and happy lifestyle.  Her best advice for a first timer would be to ask themself lf if this is really their passion, if they want to live this lifestyle. Having a great support system helps a lot. It’s important to take things day by day, have a plan.

For competitors on their way to the pro status, it’s crucial to have a vision on where you want to be. This is you versus you. Whenever you improve, you’re on the right track. Get a great support system and do things day by day.

COACHES' SERIES; Team Cosmic Bodies

Picture
On this episode of coaches' series Celeste Rains-Turk features the power couple behind Team Cosmic Bodies featuring Lauren Dannenmiller who has a BS in Health Science and has been a guest on the show as an IFBB bikini pro who won the 2017 NPC National bikini overall champion title and competitor Kyle Burns who has his BS in health and exercise science and is in pre doctorate stages for physical therapy.

Celeste starts off the episode by asking Lauren and Kyle to share their coaching philosophy. Kyle explains how their priority is to take the most responsible approach possible and heavily emphasize educating their clients. Celeste then asks Kyle what inspired him to pursue his doctorate in Physical Therapy while also running his business. After discussing his goals in terms of his education, Celeste uses Kyle’s response to transition into the question of how he and Lauren know how far they can push an athlete.

Lauren shares her thoughts on how both the athlete’s level their goals help determine how hard she will push them during their prep. Both Lauren and Kyle highlight the importance of trust and communication with their clients and how that affects the levels they are willing to push them to. Next, Celeste asks them how they prioritize their energy and focus since they coach clients at various levels and goals.

Then, Lauren, and Kyle discuss their thoughts on a natural athlete’s potential for success in the NPC given that they may not be genetically gifted. Lauren and Kyle share their experiences and insight about the importance of patience and understanding that natural athletes, especially new to competing, need to be realistic with their expectations and timelines for their goals and how “living the lifestyle” will benefit them long term. Lauren, having been a natural athlete her entire competing career, shares valuable insight from her own experiences and again emphasizes how patience is key for both success and longevity in the sport.

From there, Celeste asks Lauren and Kyle how they prioritize their clients hormone health. Lauren mentions why her and Kyle prefer longer preps for their clients and how that method allows for refeeds and diet breaks which both can help maintain healthy hormone levels for as long as possible during prep.

They also mention how tracking a female competitors cycle adds to their data collection for their prep and how it plays a role in how they can better coach their clients.

Celeste then asks Lauren and Kyle how they deal with the mental and emotional demands involved with coaching. The couple shares that although it’s still a work in progress, they have learned from their mentors about the importance of setting boundaries and specifying days or time away from work.

They share that they feel this will give them not only longevity in coaching but allows for them to invest time and attention to their relationship. Next, Celeste asks Lauren and Kyle what they feel makes a good coach and team.

The couple discusses what they feel is important and also mention goals they have for the future of Team Cosmic Bodies while still sticking to their principles and philosophies.

Celeste then asks Lauren and Kyle what important questions an athlete should ask during the initial interview process and afterwards they share some of their coaching pet peeves.

Celeste then asks Lauren and Kyle’s opinion on politics in competing. The conversation transitions into athlete qualities, and Celeste has Lauren and Kyle share what they feel separates the good from the phenomenal athletes.

After discussing coaching philosophy Celeste starts the hypothetical round of questions. Celeste starts off the round by asking: if she was a competitor with overall wins under her belt, wanting to hit the national circuit yet is looking for a new coaching approach, why would she hire Lauren and Kyle.

Lauren shares her experiences on her journey through various national shows on her road to pro and explains why those lessons make her a great coach. Next, the couple discusses how they address clients who express that they don’t feel they are ready for their upcoming show.

Lauren and Kyle also share what they would like a first time competitor to know before deciding to commit to a contest prep. Celeste then asks how the couple approaches training and nutrition when a client comes to them after a bad rebound. Lastly, Celeste asks if Lauren and Kyle would still put an athlete on stage if they have executed their plan to a tee, except for their posing and stage presentation.

Celeste then moves on to the rapid fire round of questions, asking the couple to give short one-sentence answers to topics such as waist trainers, macros vs meal plans, fed vs fasted, and HIIT or steady state cardio, water cutting and supplements. Based off of their responses, Celeste takes the lead and asks Lauren and Kyle to expand on their thoughts on water cutting during peak week and before a show.

Next, Celeste asks the couple to share why they advocate for the use of creatine. After discussing creatine and other supplementation, Kyle shares his thoughts on waist trainers. To conclude the episode, Lauren and Kyle tell listeners where and how they can find and connect with them further.

COACHES' SERIES; Hillary Giuda Philpott-HGP Elite

Picture
In this episode, Celeste sits down and talks with Hillary Giuda Philpott, a mother of 2,  certified personal trainer and nutrition coach who started training competitors in 2017 & opened her own home gym in 2018. Hillary went into coaching full time in 2019 and is the owner of Team HGP Elite.

Celeste starts off the episode by asking Hillary to give a brief summary of her coaching philosophy. Next, Celeste asks Hillary about her “whole picture” approach she takes and how understanding her clients lifestyle outside of fitness helps her prepare and provide them the best tools for success.

Hillary shares an example of how stress can play a role in a clients results and how that can affect progress instead of the body’s response to the prescribed plan. After discussing how understanding lifestyle factors influences her coaching strategies, Hillary shares her thoughts on how she knows how hard to push a client given their goals. Celeste then uses a piece of Hillary’s response to transition into the topic of hormonal health and asks how Hillary how she prioritizes hormone health for her clients.

Next, Hillary shares her thoughts on what she feels makes a good coach a good coach, or a team a good team. She emphasizes the importance of understanding the body’s functions, limits, and when it is and is not appropriate to push a client to certain extremes. Hillary highlights that it is important for a coach to have good people skills so their clients will not feel fear or anxiety during check ins. Regardless of whether a client has perfectly executed their plan or have encountered an obstacle, they should feel a level of comfort and peace to be able to openly discuss that with their coach.

After sharing her thoughts on client-coaching relationships and the trust that should come with that, Celeste asks Hillary if she has any pet peeves regarding coaching or the fitness industry as a whole. She shares a personal experience she had in where a coach made her feel like she wasn’t good enough and that she had to prove her worth as an athlete via the execution of her plan, and how she vows to never let her clients feel less than one another on her team.

Celeste briefly dives into the psychology behind athletes working to please coaches instead of for self gratification and affects, both positive and negative, that can have on ones mentality. Celeste then asks Hillary how she prioritizes her energy and focus on her clients of different levels, as she works with women who have goals for both lifestyle and competition.

Switching gears, Celeste asks Hillary what qualities or characteristics she feels separates a good athlete from a phenomenal athlete. Hillary shares her thoughts on this topic with her personal experiences as a competitor. She also emphasizes that while she believes competing is possible for everyone, it must be made a priority for one to be successful.

After sharing her thoughts, Celeste asks Hillary how she personally deals with the physical, mental, and emotional tolls that come with being a coach. Once again, Hillary shares how her experiences as a competitor helps her empathize and relate to her clients on a deeper level, and the strategies she uses when facing difficult situations.

Next, Celeste touches on the camaraderie amongst the athletes on Hillary’s team and asks how she was able to foster such a supportive environment. Hillary admits that she isn’t quite sure how the strong camaraderie came to be, but expresses her pride in the fact that all her clients seem to connect, regardless of their goal, current fitness level, or physical location.

Next, Celeste asks Hillary’s opinion on politics and competing. Hillary shares her thoughts, again both personal and from experiences with clients. She also shares her insights on a natural athlete’s potential for success in the NPC without being “genetically gifted.”

Hillary emphasizes the importance of understanding that while all goals are attainable, everyone’s timeline for achieving said goals will be very different. To conclude the philosophical round of questions, Celeste asks Hillary if there is anything she wishes potential clients would ask her, or any coach, in the initial interview process. Hillary shares that she feels a client should always feel comfortable to ask a coach the why’s behind their plan and be able to always have an open and honest line of communication.

Moving on, Celeste starts the hypothetical round of questions.
Hillary highlights the strengths she brings to the table and the strategy she would take when bringing an athlete to the national stage.

While discussing her approach to programming and rebounds, Hillary addresses the importance of continuing to follow a reverse diet despite the setback instead of resorting to once again restricting food, as the focus should be on a client’s recovery instead of going back to caloric restriction as a form of punishment.

Both Celeste and Hillary discuss the importance of understanding the psychology aspect of a rebound and the strategies to use with clients to set them up for success in terms of getting their consistency back on track. To finish up the hypotheticals round, Celeste asks Hillary if a competition client has been consistent with everything except their posing, whether or not she would still let them step on stage.

They reference Celeste's food relationship program and resources which Hillary has found success in sending her clients to.

Celeste then moves into the rapid fire round of questioning, where she has Hillary give a short answer on a handful of topics, including meal plans versus macros, waist trainers, and fasted cardio. After sharing her responses, Hillary expands on the topic of macros versus meal plans and she emphasizes that what matters most about a diet is not the type but whether or not it is sustainable.

Next, Celeste asks Hillary to elaborate on her opinion of fed versus fasted cardio, as Hillary had a strong reaction to the initial question. Hillary shares her reasoning behind her cardio preference and then gives some insights to her thoughts on supplements. To conclude the episode, Celeste asks Hillary to share her website and social media channels so listeners can connect with her further.

COACHES' SERIES; TEAM ATLAS-James Ayotte, Jennifer Dorie, & Angeline Jeanson

1/6/2021

Picture
Host Celeste Rains-Turk sits down with members of Team Atlas, including James Ayotte, Angeline Jeanson, and Jennifer Dorie. James started coaching in 2016 and has made 21 IFBB pros in the past 2 years. He currently has 2 of the Top 5 bikini Olympians & had 4 bikini Olympians in 2020. Angeline is the head posing coach and builds their athletes' complete look. She is an IFBB bikini pro and a mechanical engineer. Jennifer has a degree in Kinesiology, and placed 2nd at the prestigious 2020 Olympia.

The conversation begins with James discussing the detailed philosophy of Team Atlas and what sets them apart. James says that each detail is cared for, from bracelets to suit color. The most important thing is the quality of the athletes produced. Each athlete gets individual service, no one is just a number.

Celeste asks James to discuss how they manage having so many athletes. Many tasks are delegated to Jen and Angeline, such as administrative tasks, as well as getting multiple points of view from Jen and Angeline. James credits organization for their success.

They never procrastinate. Jen says they all thrive off of being productive and enjoying what they do. Angeline talks about the most important things the athletes need to focus on in each posing session. She coaches technique first then works on the details. She selects every detail about their look, including suit connectors, cut and color. James expands on suit selection and its importance and how it’s so difficult to get the perfect cut and color.

Regarding what sets apart a good athlete from a champion athlete, James starts with a bad athlete as someone who doesn’t have great genetics and doesn’t follow the plan. A good athlete begins with someone who follows protocol and makes corrections and listens to feedback. A great athlete is someone who cares deeply about their progress. Jen agrees that being coachable is important. The athlete has to take ego out of the process.

James says the best athlete can put their egos aside. Angelina says she agrees with the ego element. She wants each athlete to look their best on stage and sometimes sees athletes unwilling to listen to her advice and they get limited by their egos. James says he, Jen, and Angelina are all very different and all the same. They have different approaches but are all detailed and organized.

James talks about the fine balance between pushing an athlete and prep while keeping them as healthy as possible. He admits that prepping is not the healthiest thing. Bodybuilding is an extreme sport and requires an athlete to experience hunger. He would never do anything extreme to get an athlete on stage.

He would say no and recommend a later show. He hates short prep because it doesn’t allow for time to practice posing, also. Jen says sometimes clients have unrealistic expectations and she has to be honest with the athlete that they will not be healthy and show ready. Extreme preps also make the rebound much harder.

Celeste asks James for his thoughts on the claims that politics play a role in judging outcomes. He and Jen both say it’s ridiculous and a cop-out. There are no free wins, they are all earned in the IFBB. The judges want the best athlete to win on show day. There is a panel of judges as an insurance to keep fair judging.

James brings up the point that Instagram photos look different than stage comparison photos, which can show more detail. Angelina says that the overall look matters in judging and can take away from a great physique. Fifty percent of the battle is your presentation and posing. If you’re going to make a choice, like an unusual hair cut or suit color, everything else has to be on point.

Celeste asks Angeline what they would do if they had an athlete whose physique is on point but their posing is lacking. Would they still put them on stage? Angeline is honest with the athlete how their posing will hinder them. She says it’s on them if they decide to ignore their posing practice and still get on stage.

Celeste asks James what he would want someone to know before they commit to competing. James says they are very passionate about their jobs and wants their athletes to have the best experience. They aren’t driven by the money, they have passion for their athletes. Jen says if you aren’t willing to give 100%, then Team Atlas isn’t for you. They expect a lot and have high standards. They have never declined an athlete because of genetics, only because of work ethic and mindset.

Next, the team discusses how they would handle an athlete who doesn’t feel ready but is physically ready. They would encourage them to stop looking in the mirror! Send check-ins and listen to the coaches. If James isn’t worried, the athlete shouldn’t be worried.

James likes to have athletes ready ahead of time so they can cruise into the show and have a more refreshed body. If an athlete isn’t going to be ready but still wants to compete at a specific show, she asks what their goals are for the show. If it’s just a matter of having fun and bringing their best, then she thinks it’s fine they still choose that show. They would never tell an athlete they are capable of something they aren’t. They want their athletes to have realistic goals.

Celeste asks their approach to an athlete that has a bad post-show rebound. James explains how the metabolism is affected at the end of prep and how a reverse is necessary to bring it back to a higher rate. He says reverse is harder than prep because the show is over but they still need to stay on track.

For the last hypothetical question, Celeste asks if an athlete that is one year into competing and wants to turn pro, why would they hire Team Atlas? James says he would actually encourage the athlete to stick with their current coach if they are doing well. Jen says if this happens, usually there is an issue. If you’re happy where you are, then don’t shop around. But if you have to chase your coach for check ins, then you should inquire about a new coach.

Celeste begins the rapid fire questions with seven questions and each coach gives short answers. To see all questions asked in the coach series you can visit the main blog breaking it down

After finishing the rapid fire questions, Celeste asks where the egg term came from. James says it was something silly that came from another client referring to himself as an egg when he had to shave his head and beard for a show.

Celeste wraps up by thanking Team Atlas for joining her on the podcast.

In this special Coaches edition, host Celeste Rains-Turk has the pleasure of interviewing the dynamic duo behind Glam Girl Bikini Team!

Coach Amy and Chris are the co-hosts of Prep Life Podcast. Coach and CEO Amy is not only a Top 3 NPC bikini competitor, she is also a successful NPC judge, promoter, and coach to IFBB professionals.

She has also coached hundreds of nationally certified NPC competitors, holds a Master of Science in Educational Leadership and Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education, is a certified personal trainer, and a loving mother. She stands alongside Glam Girl Coach Chris, an IFBB professional and certified personal trainer.

To begin, Celeste asks the girls about their coaching philosophy.

Amy stresses that a personalized and a “unicorn” approach is the center of Glam Girls. Amy explains her journey about losing 50 pounds with her husband, fixing her cholesterol, and her love for competing. Chris expresses that the well-rounded approach while truly caring for the athlete is what drew her to be a coach at Glam Girls.

Amy admits to “nerding out” with data and science and how this has impacted her coaching strategies. Amy explains how each athlete  get 30 minutes one-on-one once a week to get a 3d body scan, practice posing, or discuss anything important to the clients.

They emphasize communication, sending a video during feedback, and practicing empathy has allowed them to expand the Glam Girl coaching business. Chris discusses using an online portal to track progress, send check-ins, ask holistic questions, and see trends.

Celeste asks Amy about how they gage on pushing their athletes. They discuss their “cortisol reset” protocol where they bring down training and up food to allow athletes the chance to decrease their stress. Chris values coaches who are educated on science/human pathophysiology and can communicate openly with their clients. Amy stresses to clients to have realistic expectations, especially on how long it takes to lose weight and be show ready.

Celeste asks the coaches on what they believe makes a promising athlete in the sport. Chris says, “to be exceptional, you must do exceptional things.” Amy emphasizes that her top athletes all have a realistic perspective on their goals and their perseverance on their execution. They also agree that a clients willingness to push the limits sets themselves apart from other athletes. Amy comments that being an NPC judge makes her a better coach by seeing trends, posing, and suits throughout the industry.

Celeste, Amy, and Chris discuss their opinions on success in natural athletes. Chris, a natural athlete herself, states that there are several natural athletes throughout the division that have had great careers without enhancements. She does express, however, that genetics do play an important role on creating the figure needed in bikini.

Amy discusses her journey of being a successful coach. Amy expresses that she had to learn to prioritize her family but will attempt to get back to all clients within 24 hours. Amy will give herself certain hours of the day to respond to clients but emphasizes to clients that they should use their online portal for other coaches to answer the questions. Chris says that sometimes the line can be blurred between coach versus friend. She advices other coaches that setting business hours helps maintain proper relationships.

Finally, Celeste asks the coaches hypothetical questions regarding caloric deficits, team shows, hunger, and what it takes to make it to the top! These Glam Girls are educated, reliable, and the type of coach you need at any level of training.

COACHES' SERIES; NICOLE FERRIER

1/4/2021

Picture
In this episode, Celeste kicks off the second round of Coach’s Week by speaking with Nicole Ferrier, an online lifestyle and competition coach who is also the host of her own podcast, Beyond the Bikini, and who is an NPC Bikini athlete and has competed in 18 shows.

Celeste also emphasizes Nicole’s education credentials and certifications and highlights that Nicole also focuses on prioritizing her clients mental health and food relationships in both the lifestyle and competition realms.

First, Celeste breaks down the types of questions she will be asking Nicole so both Nicole and the listeners can understand the structure of this new Coach’s Series. Celeste starts off with a round of philosophy questions, asking Nicole to summarize her personal philosophy and coaching style.

Nicole then goes on to share how she handles the mental, physical and emotional demands that coaching can have as she is a coach who is heavily invested in her clients results and progress. Celeste mentions how Nicole emphasizes educating her clients and how she works with them on their relationship with food.

Nicole shares how she works with clients that feel apprehensive or overwhelmed about the prescribed food on their plan, especially with those that are prescribed more food than they are used to eating. Nicole also opens up and shares her personal struggles with an eating disorder and how that experience has helped her become a better coach.

After discussing the importance of coaching and food relationships, Celeste asks Nicole her opinion on what she feels is important in a coach or a team that sets them apart from others. With Nicole’s opinion in mind, she shares how her experiences as a competitor have helped her shape and mold her personal coaching philosophy and also talks about what she wishes potential clients would ask her in their initial consultation call.

Next, Celeste asks Nicole to elaborate more on some of her coaching strategies. Celeste starts off by asking a listener question, having Nicole share how she determines how far or how hard she can push her athletes. Celeste then asks Nicole how she addresses situations with clients that go “above and beyond” their plan. Branching off of the topic of monitoring client progress, Celeste asks Nicole about the approach she takes when peaking her clients for competition while taking a macro based approach.

Nicole then shares her opinion on what she feels are qualities or characteristics that separate the good  athletes from the phenomenal athletes. Celeste then asks Nicole to share her opinion on the somewhat taboo subject of natural athletes in the NPC and their potential for success without having “gifted genetics.” Circling back to the focus of client health as Nicole had mentioned previously, Celeste asks Nicole how she keeps her clients internal health a priority.

After talking coaching strategies Celeste and Nicole discuss pet peeves and about both the fitness industry in general and coach-client relationships. Nicole gives a more in depth description of how she prioritizes her clients given that they have such varying goals, for example lifestyle and competition, and she also shares her opinion on politics in competing.

From there, Celeste starts the second round of questioning, the hypotheticals, and asks that Nicole share her best opinion on each question. The subjects in this round consist of topics such as clients on their road to pro looking to change coaches before hitting the national circuit, client reassurance from Nicole as their coach if they are experiencing doubt during contest prep, what Nicole would like a potential client to know before committing to a competition prep, how she would help a competitor deal with a bad rebound, and if she would follow through with putting a competition client on stage even knowing that this client hadn’t been as diligent and dedicated to perfecting their stage presentation.

After finishing the hypotheticals, Celeste and Nicole get into the quick fire round of questioning. The quick fire round includes topics such as meal plan preferences, best methods of cardio for fat loss, waist trainers, and supplements.

Nicole chooses a few of those questions to elaborate on and share her deeper thoughts and insight. She then shares key advice to listeners about the process of interviewing and hiring a coach and Celeste concludes the episode by having Nicole share where and how listeners can find her and connect with her further.

Coaches' Series Round 2: All the Questions Asked, What to Expect, and our New Guests

1/3/2021

I want to preface this week by saying every coach I am bringing on is a professional with their own achievements, education, and experience. Many of them you will recognize as well-known names.

If I could fit every amazing coach in the bikini competition world on the show, we would have a whole other podcast, but I am so excited about the coach’s I will be conducting these interviews with.

None of the coaches have paid to come on and there will be as limited bias as possible.

Every episode will contain the same set of questions for the coach’s until the end or little moments throughout the episode where we might expand on 1-3 extra topics I have prepared just for the specific coach.

This is all about getting some serious understanding about who these coaches are, what their philosophy is and even asking them questions others might be afraid to ask them.

The intention is for you all to learn not just about them and their style but also learn from them and their expertise.

This is not a popularity contest, a who is better than who, or a which is the right way fight, this is about truly highlighting the individual strengths and systems each of these coaches have to offer competitors in their own passionate way because we all know everyone is different and so are these coaches.

I am so grateful to have had the chance to interview another great group of coaches supporting athletes in their bodybuilding

Every coach/team brings a unique perspective, valuable and implementable information, as well as their own personalities to the table as they discuss their approach!

The coaches’ series is intended to not just provide info on these coaches but also provide great questions & considerations for you to bring to any of the coaches you are considering working with or even to your current coach!

The first coaching series can still be found in the podcast blog categories or just by scrolling through the episodes on your favorite streaming platform!

Just search “Confessions of a Bikini Pro” and hit subscribe

You are the client!! You deserve the coach relationship that beat suits and serves you

It’s awesome to see how some girls jive with one coach over another and I love how these coaches strive for that too

Make sure to visit the show notes each day of the week for each individual episode to see a full breakdown of their time stamps, perspectives, and ways to connect with them!

This Round You Will Hear From:
  • Nicole Ferrier
  • Amy Ehinger and Chris Nicole of Glam Girl Bikini
  • James Ayotte, Jennifer Dorie, and Angeline Jeanson of Team Atlas
  • Adam Atkinson Of See You Later Leaner
  • Hilary Giuda-Philpott of HGP Elite
  • Lauren Dannenmiller and Kyle Burns of Team Cosmic Bodies

I asked each coach the same questions with the exception of specialty questions designed based on the coach/team to highlight their uniqueness as well as any branch off questions to dig a bit deeper

ALL THE QUESTIONS I ASKED EVERY COACH:

Philosophy Round:
  1. How would u summarize your coaching philosophy?
  2. What kind of mental physical and even emotional toll does coaching take on you?  How do you handle these types of demands?
  3. What do you think makes a coach a ‘good’ coach or team a good team?
  4. What do you think is the difference between a good athlete and a phenomenal, winning champion athlete?
  5. How do you determine how far to push an athlete?
  6. Do you feel that natural athletes have a chance at success in the NPC if they do not have the genetics?
  7. What are some things you would recommend girls ‘look out’ for before deciding to hire someone? What are questions you wish potential clients would or would not ask you to determine if it is going to be a good fit?
  8. What do you have to say to the people who say politics with teams plays a role in their client’s placing? Or that all of this is political?
  9. How do you make your client’s hormone health a priority?
  10. Any pet peeves with being a coach as well as in the industry?
  11. How do you manage your focus or prioritize your time and energy when you have or if you had multiple top performing pros?

Hypothetical Round:
  1. If I am 1 year into competing with a few overall wins under my belt and my goal is to get my pro card and I have never stepped on the national stage and have been working with the same coach for 1 years but was looking for a new approach why would I hire you?
  2. If I am 4 weeks out from a show and keep saying I don’t feel ready, but you believe I am, what is your response?
  3. Lets say someone comes to you wanting to compete or considering it, what is something you want them to know before they compete?
  4. Your client comes to you and says they have rebounded after their show and just wants to reverse it and get back to normal, what do you do from a nutrition and training perspective?
  5. Someone’s physique is on point and they have been nailing everything in their plan but their posing is lacking and they haven’t been practicing, do you put them on stage?

Rapid fire answer with 1 sentence or less then they can pick some to expand on
  1. Waist trainers
  2. IIFYM /Flexible Dieting or meal plans
  3. Fasted cardio?
  4. Water Cut
  5. Steady state or HIIT?
  6. Best supplements for competitors
  7. Ever fired a client?

Anything I didn’t ask you that you think I should have?
