Picture
In this episode Celeste speaks with Melanie Cyr, an IFBB Bikini Pro from Canada with a degree in family medicine, who has been practicing since 2017. Melanie found competing while looking for a challenge and her “one and done” mentality led her to finding a love for the sport and a desire to become a professional athlete.

Celeste and Melanie dive into Melanie’s career as a physician and how she decided to get into bodybuilding while also trying to start her medical practice. Melanie shares what her schedule was like while in med school and how she realized she had fallen into some unhealthy habits due to the demands of the curriculum. She started following a meal plan and workout regimen as a means of being an example for her patients and ultimately found competing, thus finding a way to make both her work and school schedules harmonize. Celeste and Melanie talk about time management and the commitment and discipline that both med school and bodybuilding require.

Melanie discusses her long “roller coaster competition season” in 2019, sharing if she ever experienced burnout. Celeste and Melanie then dive deeper into her experiences competing at the Ben Weider, her and her coach’s peaking process, and how she dealt with the weight of expectations from friends and family. Melanie walks listeners through her competing journey to her pro card and shares the feedback she’s working towards for her pro debut.

The conversation shifts into training and Melanie shares how she gets the most out of her workouts and what she’s done to really transform her physique, given that she is not the most genetically gifted. Celeste asks Melanie to share what she feels are the biggest differences between competing in the US and Canada, and in drug tested shows vs non-drug tested shows.

Melanie also talks about her career as a doctor and her views on the sport of bodybuilding from a physicians perspective. She also shares how she empathizes with her patients when they express they don’t have time to make healthy habit and lifestyle changes. Melanie shares what her patients have taught her over the years and how she has evolved as a physician to encourage and support her patients the best way possible.

Finishing up the episode, Melanie shares strategies to have longevity in bodybuilding, and also gives her best advice for novice competitors and for the girls on their road to pro.

JOY SHEPPARD; Learning to Feel, Buddhist Monk Father's Influence, and Embracing 'No'

7/9/2021

Picture
Today Celeste speaks with Joy Sheppard, a mother and nurse practitioner who started competed in 2014. She turned pro in 2018 at North Americans when she won the Overall.

Joy talks about the feelings she has before stepping on stage and how gratitude plays into her whole prep. In speaking about her journey as a competitor, going through life struggles has really forced her to look at herself and make major changes. She recognizes the importance of really knowing why she wants to compete and playing the long game.

In recounting the experience of her first show, Joy says that it was all a blur but remembers feeling how fun it was. Over the years, her definition of fitness has changed to include way more that just a physique. She now prioritizes mental health instead of tying her worth to how hard she works.

After earning her pro card in 2018, she felt lost in her identity and decided to start therapy, which has been paramount to her current outlook on life. It helped her learn how to feel and understand her feelings, and now she doesn’t even recognize her old self.

Joy talks about how she used to use the gym and shows as distractions from her pain and unhappiness.Taking inventory of her own life allowed her to make the changes she needed in her life. She can now make conscious choices on how she responds to things. Joy notices many people put too much stock in prep and don’t give enough effort to rest and time to grow.

Joy’s ultimate goal is to make it to the Olympia stage! Because she knows herself better and repeats the sport, she feels more confident setting challenging goals!

Topics Covered Include:
-Overcoming hurdles to compete
-Taking time off to improve
-Why she competes
-Separating her identity from the stage
-The importance of mental health
-The difference between an obsession and a healthy commitment
-How Buddhism helped her parents change
-Making mindful choices
-Normalizing offseason bodies
-Being ready for the National stage
-Competing with tattoos

Celeste acknowledges that Stephanie has a solid foundation of muscle and asks how she retains her muscle during a cut. Stephanie talks about the cardio methods she feels has helped her both build and retain muscle in her legs and which she prefers during prep. Celeste and Stephanie then transition into discussing Stephanie’s experiences working with a trainer. Stephanie shares how she and her trainer met, how the two of them worked together to execute Stephanie’s prep plan, and how she eventually became more independent and confident in her capabilities in the gym before becoming a trainer herself. Confessions of a Bikini Pro Podcast

The Confessions of a Bikini Pro Podcast is the only place where IFBB Bikini Pros share their struggles, strategies, stories, insights, and advice in a real, raw, and vulnerable setting. Host, Celeste Rains-Turk, dives into the parts of these professionals' lives that aren't always openly discussed in the public eye or on social media

(You know, the stuff we tend to wonder about the most).

The goal of this podcast is to educate, inspire, and remind other competitors, athletes, or the average gym goer that even the most elite professionals face hardships, health problems, mental obstacles, and other adversities.

There are a wide range of topics discussed including, but DEFINITELY NOT limited to; post show rebound, health complications, eating disorders, mental illnesses, winning mindset, dealing with losses, judges feedback, approaches to the stage, life outside of competing, money, relationships, philosophy, pursuing passions, and SO MUCH MORE!

All show notes, links, and information can be found on www.celestial.fit/podcast

Make sure to SUBSCRIBE, RATE, AND REVIEW THIS PODCAST if you LOVE it as much as we do so we can continue spreading the message to people worldwide!

And be sure to follow @celestial_fit on Instagram too so you never miss an episode!

Most athlete photos are sent in by the athlete from NPCNewsOnline.Com or from the photographer they hired and paid for their stage shots.
