When the actions you take (or don’t take) are not aligned with your expectations associated with the way you identify yourself you’ll likely experience guilt
This guilt can also be a trigger to self-sabotage where you say “well I’ve already messed up so I’ll just keep going and be better tomorrow”
Guilt serves a purpose that often gets overlooked because it can be such an uncomfortable feeling
Unlike shame, guilt is like a guide to change
It helps us to see how we can improve our actions and behaviors or adjust our expectations
Most often when I’m working with clients who experience a lot of guilt, it’s generally due to unfair and too high of expectations that really do not correlate to where they’re at in their journey, their circumstances, season of life, or needs
It’s strange how we can attribute so much meaning to a series of behaviors without consideration for if those behaviors are really the reason for the end result
In other words, people idolize others’ outcomes and say “it’s because they eat or do _ or cut all people out who ___” but the actions don’t really tell the whole story
We need to look instead at consistency, intentions, and execution process
The same Outcomes can be achieved in MANY ways with different inputs
But if your system, your mind and body and even spirit, are not prepared or equipped for the inputs you’re trying to put in, then you’re setting yourself up for failure
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t push yourself, try new things, or take the clues that success leaves
But be considerate and mindful of the standards you have for yourself and if you’re the person you need to be to uphold them yet or if you need to commit to other habits, belief building, and behaviors before those
The long term success generating path is one that is adaptable and willing to go through a process of failure before mastery is achieved
But it also requires a level of humility that sits back and says, is this really the best next step for me or am I trying to skip a few steps and hurry up to the end result?
When you can detach from when the end result comes, you’ll gain so much more knowledge, insight to apply, & satisfaction in the journey
