Many athletes convince themselves they are better off being critical and judgmental than compassionate with themselves
You think that compassion = weakness or excuses but in reality, compassion allows you to learn, find where growth is needed, and apply yourself
Without compassion, you will continue to try to change what you have not yet even accepted... you cannot change something that is not real...
As a clinical mental health counselor and competitive athlete, I understand how scary it can be to implement a practice like this as it can often feel like a threat to your future success, performance, perception, or commitment
But what we know is that in order to make effective changes, you need to first identify what needs to change
Shame will only perpetuate the current cycle as it reinforces an underlying belief system you have about yourself and have likely had for years.
I chose to create this template for you with common statements I hear from clients, inquiries, or even read about online in hopes that you can save this post and reference it when you get stuck in a cycle of shame or even guilt (although there is a distinction to be made between the two, compassion is still beneficial with both)
If you are looking for 1:1 support through this journey, I offer mental health coaching for athletes and would love to support you or your clients in their journey
