Even when we know it’s necessary, it isn’t always easy to accept
Seeing your body change after being so conditioned can trigger judgment, doubt, & self-sabotage, especially if you find yourself correlating it to food choices
But gaining weight after a show doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong! Even if you have been more flexible…
My tips as a mental health counselor who supports competitors in making peace with food & their body without sacrificing their physique goals:
1. Accept Change
You were never meant to stay stage lean. That version of you was the result of a specific & temporary protocol. Staying there long-term isn’t sustainable or healthy
2. It’s Ok to Not Always be OK with it
Mixed feelings are normal. It doesn’t make you ungrateful, undisciplined, or vain. Give yourself space to process all emotions with compassion instead of critical judgment
3. Reconnect with your Body
Maybe your digestion’s better, sleep improves, thoughts aren’t all about how hungry or tired you are. These are signs your body is coming back into balance—even if your physique isn’t as defined. This progress deserves celebration just as much as any prep changes did
4. Adapt
Wear things that make you feel good in THIS body—not the one from 6 weeks ago. This can leave you questioning if you’re “ruining” your reverse when in reality growth is why we reverse.
5. Communicate
Be honest with yourself, loved ones, & your coach. It’s ok to admit you may need more support or a different approach
6. Remember the Benefits
The reverse phase isn’t about “undoing” your progress—it’s about protecting it. By nourishing your body & restoring function, you’re making it possible to grow, improve, & show up stronger next season. Plus you get to capitalize on all your hard work from dieting & try to hit a new set point
The post-show phase can bring you face-to-face with your relationship to control, self-worth, & identity
This work is deeper than surface level—it’s mental, emotional, & spiritual
