This has been coming up a lot in recent mental health workshops I have been asked to do for teams
Many of you know I am a huge advocate of NOT giving up the sport you love or your fitness goals. I believe you can work towards them and achieve them while having a healthy relationship with food.
While this subject is heavily nuanced and one post could never serve as medical advice or a replacement for professional help, I do hope that in reading this you see that it is important to be MINDFUL
When you commit to certain habits and behaviors, it can be easy to go on autopilot mode or fall into justification traps that start to border on eating disorder
And disordered eating, no matter how you slice it, is often undiagnosed or treated (hello fitness industry I am talking to you!) because it is seen as POSITIVE to the individual....
Things like compensating for extra food you weren't 'supposed' to eat with extra cardio or less food later or behaviors like eating as much as you can in one sitting and to the point of sickness only to be 'perfect' the rest of the week or telling yourself xyz foods are off limits and you can't 'control' yourself around them
Gosh, it's wild what can be perpetuated as NORMAL is actually quite HARMFUL when done repeatedly and engrained as beneficial...
I want you to know your DEDICATION and DRIVE DO NOT MAKE YOU DISORDERED!!!!
Be an athlete;
- Strive for more
- Push your limits
- Tick your Boxes
- Embrace the Difficult Seasons
- Do what others won't do
- Own your crazy side
But in that process;
- Take Responsibility
- Acknowledge when Habits are going to Unhealthy Extremes
- Recognize patterns of punishment or self-loathe and criticism or judgment that does not serve you
- Be willing to seek help
- Create & follow a process that is MOST sustainable and healthy long-term
- Accept that the extremes are not sustainable
I have helped thousands of athletes improve their relationship with food without giving up their goals as a competitor or within fitness
