Ways to Make Competing more Fulfilling

September 04, 20252 min read

- Be more focused on the process than the outcome. The process is what is repeated day in & day out. Master this in such a way where it is sustainable and something you do naturally and the outcome takes care of itself.

- Know that it is better to step away & grow than it is to keep racking up more stage time & top 5 trophies. Growth seasons will take time but they’ll ultimately accelerate your progress in more rewarding ways. (This was a mistake I made & wish I learned from earlier)

- Comparison is beneficial if it’s to improve & learn and doesn’t impede on your ability to be a good sport, follow through, support others, & have respect for your own journey as well as theirs

- If you do what you say you’re going to do, you’re less likely to feel guilt and shame. If your mental state is keeping you from this then invest in help so all your other investments don’t go to waste. I’m all for a brand new suit but not if you’re wearing it with lacking confidence & Joy or mental peace. Prioritize that.

- Keep focusing on things in life outside of the sport and let your social media feeds also be representative of other things you enjoy & are passionate about

- Be Honest with yourself on where your physique is at & be open to the feedback you receive. You may not “nail” it everytime but you’re learning what matches criteria best for your frame

- Make friends & connections. Don’t count yourself out. I was so shy at my first show. But I started opening up later & I’m glad I did

- Have your basic needs met before committing to competition. It is not worth your health, not being able to buy groceries the next month, pay your bills, go into debt, lose all connections, & let work productivity go

- Root your identity outside of this sport. For me I put my identity in Christ and it relieved me of the external pressures I felt in this. It equipped me to walk away with peace of mind & satisfaction because although I didn’t earn the pro card I worked so hard for, I had everything I could ever need in Him
