Often times when working with people who are struggling with binge eating there is a ton of resistance to the idea of not being perfect right away
In an effort to work through and combat the cognitive distortion of all or nothing thinking you have to consider the scary gray area
We love the extremes because they’re predictable. But what we really need is often not meeting one extreme with another as this only perpetuates the belief that you either have to do it all x way or y way (this is why I am not a fan or advocate of implementing the all in approach of eating whatever whenever, shifting straight to “intuitive” eating, or even going back on a cut prematurely)
While the work I do and support people through is the mental side of their relationship with food and their body, there is an element of direction that I offer them to consider in the meantime to help rewire some of these pathways
Usually this is implemented more freely in an improvement season and with more tact if I am working with someone struggling in a prep
It is better to try any of these 4 things than to continue to try to white knuckle your way to perfection or rigidity. You would benefit more from regaining confidence in your execution than you would from more and more days of “tomorrow will be better” or “I’ll just get rid of all this after this one time”
If you have one mindfully it’s better than 10 mindless emotional not even tasted later
If you have a day where your macros aren’t perfect or you know it’ll be tough it’s ok to shift to a day of calories only or just tracking your protein for example
It is better to raise food by an average of the amount you are binging or overeating than it is to keep trying to force lower macros to adhere to. Up your food to at least help your body through this process. You might gain faster than you planned but not as fast as if you continue to binge
I invite you to work directly with me through my 5 week food relationship program. You can learn more about it and apply at www.celestial.fit/foodfreedom
