How do you make peace with food & your body while you’re on prep?
Although prep is more demanding in ways than an improvement season, it’s still extremely possible to have a healthy relationship with food while working toward such an awesome goal
When you set the standard for your prep it probably sounds a lot like:
- stick to the plan provided by coach
- don’t miss workouts or meals
- no extra bites licks tastes
- posing every day or most days of the week
- prioritize rest, sleep, recovery
- be more strategic about social events attended vs not
- track data more intently
- never miss a check in with your coach
- etc
It can be very rigid because an extreme goal often requires extreme effort
Of course when we look at the criteria for every category in bodybuilding, there is a high demand for excellence
1st order of business is to accept what you can expect… if you can’t do that you’re already setting yourself up for disappointment & lack of fulfillment
2, when you eat, do not go through the motions…you’re not just eating because “coach told me to” there needs to be much more intention & understanding about how & why you’re CHOOSING this fuel for your body, life, & goals
3, get so clear on your personal core values that when you’re making decisions you can identify how they do or do not align with what matters most to you
4, relinquish the white knuckle grip & establish trust with yourself. Believe it or not, when you give yourself freedom you’d be surprised at how likely you are to choose the right thing for yourself IF you’re tuned into your values
5th order of business, know what seed you’re watering. If you’re planting a seed of “I’m not good enough” and every time you hit the gym you’re fixated on the negatives, you’re nurturing neuroticism that’s likely going to bite you in the butt post show
6, nothing is permanent. Mistakes, wins, set backs, the body, none will last forever
7, know what is realistic for you to sustain your efforts over long periods of time. At the root you need drive, determination, ability to delay gratification. What process is best for you?
