Negative Impacts of Binge Eating on Competitors

June 24, 20242 min read

Addressing binge eating is crucial for competitors to maintain optimal performance, health, and longevity in the sport

Often times, it does not get addressed because there is a narrative of justifying or even promoting compensatory behaviors

The fitness industry has unfortunately glamorized things like;
- working it off
- reduce food intake the next day
- purging through extra cardio
- cheat days
- post-show treats/binging

It is unfortunately the name of the game in mental health though...often times the worst behaviors for our longevity and success tend to be promoted because they seem helpful to the end result

It is no surprise that binging or overeating and the compensatory behaviors that often follow are easily justifiable by a flawless physique or a 'wash' of macros at the end of the week

But these patterns of eating, restricting, excessive exercise to 'make up for it', weight fluctuations and control methods ALL will impact your HEALTH long term

Competing and physique aside, it is a harm to your body

Competing and physique considered, it is a harm to your potential and desired results in this sport

I work with athletes to make peace with food and their body WITHOUT sacrificing their goals

As an athlete myself, the last thing I would promote is giving up on your goals or your commitments as a competitor
