Masterpiece or Score Card?

June 09, 20252 min read

Your body is your masterpiece. But as a competitor it’s also a score sheet, feedback form, & built to be measured against criteria you’ve elected to make a standard for yourself

Yet, it’s also your home

And living in a home that’s constantly under construction can leave you feeling unsettled—even when you “know better” or know it’s going to be constantly evolving as an athlete

So Why do we still get caught up in it?

I’ll share a few reasons…

Psychologically, body image is more than appearance—it’s a relationship. Based not just on how your body looks but your perception of your body, how you think others view your body, how you feel in your body, and how you experience things in your body

But when that relationship is built on conditions (stage lean = praise and sometimes undesirable comments from people who don’t get it, improvement season = fear or less attention or again comments from people who don’t get it or know what your body needs), your self-worth can become unstable because so much of it has been rooted in what others think about your body & how they view it especially within the context of your identity as a competitor

It can feel like you’re under a microscope when in reality you’re likely caught up in a very small corner of the world or Instagram where it seems like “everyone” is fit, lean, on stage, or a pro

Clinically, this whole wrap up in the external views can encourage body surveillance—a chronic internal monitoring that increases shame, anxiety, & disconnection because you’re constantly putting your body up against a cultural standard….this culture being bodybuilding

Competitors are highly vulnerable to this because of the nature of the niche

An example for addressing this in improvement season might sound like:
“My body is changing because I’m growing. I can respect this phase as part of the process. My body is worthy of the recovery, building, & balance this season brings me.”

This can help body image resilience
