Why do we get Post-Show Blues?

The goal you’ve been fixated on, working towards, & even rewarded for has now come to an end

Dopamine gets us hooked on taking action towards our goals while serotonin is more-so acting as a mediator between you & quitting by making the difficult things a bit easier to endure

Simultaneously norepinephrine is likely supporting you with that laser focus/tunnel vision to do what needs to be done

But what happens after the show? Some people experience post-show blues whereby you crash & things like motivation, happiness, commitment, & drive seem to come to a low point

Although this may not be totally preventable in working towards a goal, here’s how I would apply some of this knowledge YEAR ROUND to support longevity & a healthy focus:

1) Focus as much as you can on the habits instead of the outcome. Being process oriented will support you in keeping your reward system centered on WHAT YOU DO instead of THE RESULTS OF WHAT YOU DO. Not fixating on the end result won’t take away from you bringing your best but it will help you come out of it & sustain habits that led you there when you do

2) Becoming so focused on a future oriented goal can lead to a lack of satisfaction when you do achieve it because it’s not as amazing of a feeling as the chemicals being released everytime you anchor into anticipation. Instead of dreaming about the day you are or have focus on the person you are & can be today & make it ritualistic in your life instead of seasonal

3) Try to find worth internally that you can attribute success to versus externally. Say things to yourself like, “you are a solid athlete who will be successful because of the way you show up day in & day out” instead of fixating on how you will show up on show day (let the result be a bonus)

4) Challenge your perception. We KNOW you want to bring your best, but keep an ongoing list of how this benefits your life OUTSIDE of the stage so when the stage isn’t in the picture you still have many reasons to keep going
