Custom HTML/CSS/JAVASCRIPTIn this episode, Celeste speaks with Jodie Sweeney, an IFBB Bikini Pro who set her sights on earning her pro card during the quarantine after years of dedicating her life to CrossFit. Jodie starts off the episode discussing her background in CrossFit and admits that although she wasn’t ever “good” at the sport, she found herself drawn to the family feel and community aspect it brought. While she liked the overall training structure of CrossFit, Jodie feels she is able to push herself more in bodybuilding, as there is more of a demand for dedication and focus as there is only so much time an athlete has to be ready before show day.
Jodie discusses how she found bodybuilding and how in the beginnings of her bodybuilding career she was able to train close to some of the well known gyms and prestigious shows in the area. She shares what it was like to train at JM Manion’s gym while only being in her rookie year of competing. Jodie notes that her husband was the one who had always motivated her to try bodybuilding as he saw the potential she had to be successful in the sport. Since most of her training to her pro card was during the quarantine, Jodie explains how she prepared for that and walks listeners through each show and the lessons that she learned leading up to her pro win.
Getting more personal, Celeste asks Jodie more about her family and what life was like growing up. While acknowledging Jodie’s rough upbringing, Celeste also sheds light on the financial success Jodie has experienced on her own, and asks if she received any feelings of shame or guilt from her family about her success. Jodie openly discusses her family dynamic, what growing up was like and how that influenced her views on her future and the goals she set for herself. She also discusses the challenges that came along with the decision to live on her own at 19 and what she learned from those experiences.
Jodie sheds light on the parallels between the discipline and growth required both from bodybuilding and her rough upbringing and shares how it’s made her into the woman she is today. The two women discuss how life’s challenges mold one into who the person they become and that there is so much more to someone and their story than what they share on social media.
Next, Celeste asks more about Jodie’s experiences with her coach and training, asking what inspired Jodie to make a coaching switch and what changed in her routine when making that switch. After hearing Jodie’s story of life and bodybuilding, Celeste wraps up the episode by asking Jodie to share her best advice for novice competitors and for girls on their road to pro.
